5 Tips to Writing a Brand Bio…on any platform

Your bio is the public’s first impression of your brand. It will establish the brand’s tone and mission within a few characters or sentences. Whether you are writing a biography for your website, Instagram, Facebook or LinkedIn here are the things you should consider:

  1. Mission Statement or a rendition of it: Your mission statement is paramount to establishing tone and relaying your goal for the company or profession. For your website, this can be a few sentences. There are only a few characters available on social media so you may need to cut and paste the MOST important parts to include in these bios. A mission statement should include your function (services offered), goal (what pain point does your brand solve), a general description (who, where, and why).

  2. Keywords: These are the words that will increase your searchability on any platform. It is one or two words that show up on search engines. If you are a florist, words such as flowers, flower arrangements, seasonal flowers, etc. are words people would search for that are related to your business. These words should be sprinkled throughout your bio (even include them in your mission statement).

  3. Include links: Add your website URL, newsletter sign up or other links to your bio so your audience is able to follow along and find more information. This would be your call to action, to encourage your audience/future clients to keep tabs on your business and is a great way to showcase your work.

  4. Update it: Don’t just set it and forget it. Update your biography when you achieve something new, when you have an event/item to promote or to spice up the keywords. This can intrigue new viewers to look at the page and build trust with your audience.

  5. Add personality: Add an emoji (where appropriate such as on Instagram), hashtags (LinkedIn and Instagram), a catchphrase, or something that makes your brand stand out from other bios.

Condensing all that you do down to a few sentences or even harder a few characters is tough to do. Following these 5 tips should help you narrow down what is important and will allow options for your audience to find out more through links, following your social media account, or subscribing to your newsletter.
