Best Practices for Website Maintenance

Website maintenance is a huge pain point for many of my clients. Either they don’t have the technical knowledge to update the website, don’t have the bandwidth for regular maintenance, or don’t have any idea about what and where to update. This blog will consist of solving the what and where with best practices you can put in place to keep your website up to date. This is an important tool to learn, as your website is the focal point where customers go to find the information for your business.

For many industries, refreshing content monthly is the ideal frequency to inform clients of any changes in sales, stock, events, etc. This is a HUGE tool for building trust with your customers. Having a dedicated landing page for all the businesses information is paramount in ensuring that the public is aware of the goings-on in your business. Posting a sale on social media is great but the lifetime for a social media post is anywhere from 4-6 hours (depending on the platform). After that, the audience has moved on, meaning the important information is not relevant anymore and when you post more content, it is moved away from customers’ view.

Let’s say a regular shopper is chatting with their friends about this amazing new product you started to sell in-store. Do you want that potential customer to spend their valuable time scrolling IG to find those details? Or, when they google your business name, BAM the information they are searching for is right there, on your website. When these items are easy to find it makes building relationships with new customers easier. Here are some best practices to consider when updating your website:

  1. Create a calendar. Similar to social media calendar, having a calendar with specific dates (such as new stock, sales, etc.) can assist you in the updating process. Having a calendar is also great to keep yourself organized and visualize all that is going on with your business. It can be a way to show if you are taking on too much or have room for more.

  2. Update more than just one page. Refresh photos and website copy every few months. This can really help boost your searchability.

  3. Ensure all links are still active. Links to outside sources or social media need to be ready to serve your audience.

  4. Once a month, update any news, events, sales, etc. Items that change month to month in your business should be reflected on your website promptly.

These practices will truly help to grow your brand and make sure the $ you are spending on your website is doing the most for you. Social Mirror Media can also assist you with website maintenance and if you would like to learn more please reach out.
